Design Features

Advanced over-speed control mechanism vs. old style furling

Problems with old style furling:

Old style furling works well in an ideal, wind tunnel test environment. Realistically, wind speed and wind direction changes frequently and mechanical furling doesn’t have instantaneous response to actual changes of wind status. Especially in bad weather conditions, small wind turbine furling components wear out quickly, therefore, increases maintenance costs and shorten wind turbine service life or causes system failure.

Most of old style furling based wind turbines have three moving parts. It is the moving parts for mechanical over-speed protection that wear out and require a lot of maintenance. Operation of furling based wind turbines would lead to mechanical abrasion, cause vibration, malfunction, and failure of the wind turbine and other devastating results in the long run.

The rule of thumb for a reliable wind turbine is that the fewer the moving parts, the more reliable the wind turbine is.

Windmax Solution:

Windmax H series adopted Innovative over-speed control so it improves the reliability by abandoning the moving parts for mechanical over-speed protection and minimizing the moving parts to only two.

Innovative over-speed control design of the Windmax H series:

Windmax H series speed limitation abandoned the traditional failure-prone mechanical furling system and solved safety and reliability problems facing most small wind turbines. Advanced speed limitation of Windmax H series is achieved through advanced electromagnetic speed limitation supplemented by aerodynamic speed limitation by blade deformation. Electromagnetic braking is used in combination with Aerodynamic braking to reduce the rotational speed of the generator.

Combination of Electromagnetic braking and aerodynamic braking maximizes energy capture by extending Windmax H series turbine’s operating speed range into higher speed winds and lower speed winds which are missed by the old style wind turbines.

1. Electromagnetic speed limitation:

Controller will monitor the wind generator rotation through the wind generator output voltage and frequency, and will timely control wind generator rotation by generating reverse reluctance torque if necessary, according to different wind conditions and battery status. Electromagnetic control features quick response, high reliability and therefore ensures the entire control system to be highly reliable.

2. Blade aerodynamic braking:

In high wind speed conditions, patented blades will generate a reverse reluctance torque, so that the blade efficiency falls and the blade rotation speed starts to decline. With the continuing reluctance torque, blade rotation speed is limited to a certain range to prevent damage to the wind turbine blades.

Higher performance at low wind speed Problem with small wind turbine system on the market today The most challenging problem facing small wind turbine systems is that power output is very low or close to nothing under low wind condition. The wind speed in most locations don’t stay at rated wind speed all the time, wind turbine actually operates at wind speed lower than rated wind speed at most of the time. In order to have good overall energy output, it is critical for small wind turbine to output as much as power at low wind speed. WindMax Solution: Strong Neodymium magnet PMA, unique winding and multi pole design reduces the start-up torque of the alternator that assures the WINDMAX-H series can generate electricity at low wind speed. WindMax system components such as wind generator and blades are designed to output more electricity at low wind speed than other small wind turbines on the market today. WindMax system’s excellent power output under low wind speed results in greater energy production yield and lowest ownership cost.

Wind-solar hybrid power generation wind turbine system

Problem with single source renewable energy system:

1st Generation single source renewable energy systems such as solar systems or wind turbines don’t use renewable energy efficiently. Wind turbines creates less output during the summer, whereas during the winter the solar panels will produce less output.

Windmax Solution:

Our Windmax hybrid solar-wind turbine integrated wind and solar power sources capture the most energy in all conditions. Since solar and wind energy availability differs by locations, seasons and climates, solar and wind energy can be mutually complementary in that solar and wind hybrid systems make full use of wind and solar energy together to generate as much power as possible compared to a single energy source for power generation. A solar & wind hybrid system is more cost-efficient than wind or solar alone.

Easy-to-install, light weight, compact, reliable and maintenance-free wind turbines, designed for both land-based and marine applications.

Problem with old style wind turbine systems:Most old style wind turbines are heavy weight with unpredictable reliability, hard to install and require lots of maintenance. Due to the fact that most installations are in very remote and inaccessible locations, the old style systems make regular maintenance costly and sometimes impractical. Windmax Solution:Windmax H series maintenance free design has a minimum of moving parts with inherent reliability. Our light weight, compact die-casting aluminum alloy generator design makes installation very easy. Rotor blades built with latest advanced thermoplastic engineering and precision injection molding technology is durable and efficient.

WindMax H series components built with advanced technologies Generator:

Generator: The generator is built using high-performance rare earth neodymium permanent magnets, so the alternator is compact and light weight with a high power generating efficiency. The unique winding and multi pole design reduces the start-up torque of the alternator that assures the WINDMAX-H series can generate electricity at low wind speed. The generator features class B insulation, IP55 class protection, and is designed with a sufficient cushion of overload to ensure overall wind turbine reliability.

Generator housing is made with precision cast technology from high strength aluminum to assure a high quality finish. It is designed for various working conditions such as severe climate, sand and salt corrosive environments and marine usage. Aluminum die cast alloys can withstand the highest operating temperatures of all die cast alloys. Ideal for demanding environments, it offers high strength and rigidity along with good corrosion resistance and heat dissipation.

Rotor blades:

Patented Blade design vs. traditional hand made fiber glass blades:

Our Blades are made with the latest thermoplastic engineering and injection mold technologies. The blades are made of mixed reinforced fiber glass and nylon materials. These manufacturing technologies ensure the highest strength, flexibility of blades and consistency of the blade shapes. The blades will automatically slow the turbine in strong winds and reduce noise.

A set of 3 Blades designed to capture as much wind energy as possible. Patented airfoil blade design makes the system run much more efficiently and the rotor blades are made with the latest advanced thermoplastic engineering and precision injection molding technology.

The blades have exceptional consistency and aerodynamic outline with a mass distribution that ensures the rotors operate with nearly no noise and minimal vibration.

The blades feature lower start-up and cut-in speed and begin producing power at 2 m/s or 4.5 mph.

Solar/Wind Hybrid Charge Controller:

This multifunctional Hybrid controller combines the functions of AC to DC rectifier, load control and dump load control for wind and/or solar systems. It eliminates the need for separate rectifier, solar charge controller and wind turbine controller. It is the most cost effective solution for renewable energy systems.

Rooftop Wind Turbines Coming Home

From San Francisco to New York City, rooftop wind turbines are hitting the home front. Rooftop wind turbines are being installed on both homes and businesses at an unprecedented rate due to several factors including the desire to save electricity, cut down owns dependency upon fossil fuels and as a visible symbol that one is doing their part to go green.

Critics of rooftop wind turbines say that they simply don’t work or don’t work as well as advertised. The critics are right in some instances and that is why the consumer needs to know what they are getting into and what to watch out for before investing in a rooftop wind turbine.

Some of the factors that will influence the output of the rooftop wind turbine include the design itself (horizontal or vertical axis), the kilowatt rating of the generator, where the rooftop wind turbine is placed, the angle or pitch of the roof, how much wind the region provides and any obstructions that may block the wind.

The design of the rooftop wind turbine is important for several reasons. Aesthetics is one of the larger reasons homeowners today would want to put a renewable energy generator atop their houses. Also, rooftop wind generators can be a status symbol that one is doing one’s part to help the environment, create jobs for others and lower bills in these tough economic times.

Some wind turbines make more noise than others. The biggest complaint about a series of rooftop wind turbines placed at the Logan International Airport in Boston has been from an office worker below that says they make too much noise.

As I’ve stated in other sections of this website, celebrities like Jay Leno and Ed Begley, Jr. have decided to place rooftop wind turbines on their homes and garages. In both cases vertical axis magnetic wind turbines were chosen to fill the bill.

Some homeowners state that vertical axis wind turbines in general are a little quieter than their horizontal axis counterparts. Rooftop wind turbines generally come with a kilowatt (kW) rating such as 5 kW, 10 kW or 20 kW that reflects how much electricity one can expect it to generate for one’s home or business. It is important to either have a large enough rooftop wind generator or several that add up to enough in order to provide the needed power.

Some rooftop wind turbines will work more favorably when on the edge of a rooftop, such as one that is long and flat (sort of like being on the edge of a cliff with an updraft). Others, however, on roofs with more angle or pitch will work more favorably in a higher location. Finding the right spot on the rooftop can add 5 to 40-percent more efficiency in electricity generation.

One of the most obvious points is for home and business owners in rather windless areas to not buy rooftop wind turbines but rather opt for other alternative energy resources. Wind maps may help some determine if there is enough regional wind to justify the purchase of building of a rooftop wind turbine. Buying an inexpensive anemometer and tracking results is also helpful before making a decision.

A less obvious issue when deciding on putting up a rooftop wind generator may be any obstructions current or future that could block the full wind from getting to the generator. Trees, other buildings, hillsides or even large vehicles can deflect the wind away from the turbine. If the rooftop is inside a city filled with buildings the wind path can become quite tricky as it may bounce from one structure to the next causing turbulence and an inconsistent flow.

Near homes, neighbors’ trees grow and leaf out, people may put up a second story or business may build structure in close proximity to homes which all may impact rooftop wind turbines. The important thing is to think about as may variables as possible when deciding if a rooftop wind turbine makes sense and the location that fits well.

That said, many people are now rolling back their electrical meters using rooftop wind turbines. Manufacturers of these turbines are busier than ever before. With a little forethought and planning, a rooftop wind turbine may make sense (and dollars) for homes and businesses across the nation. So, what are you waiting for? The time is now just like the name of this website indicates.

Generate Electricity Using Wind Turbines at Home

Wind Turbines are widely used to Produce Green Renewable Electricity. Similar to Solar power plants, you might have definitely noticed Wind Energy power plants in actions, so are very well familiar with its actual benefits along with the quantity of Electrical power Wind Power Plants can easily generate. The Great advantage of wind (similar to Solar) is, we can easily deploy a smaller system of Wind Turbine(s) at our residence to generate Electricity.

Turbines of smaller size can certainly generate anywhere between 500 watts to 4 KW of Electricity daily. These small sizes are also called as Residential wind turbines or micro turbines. The amount of electricity generated depends upon the size, type of turbines and wind velocity.

Contrary to Solar panels, we could create Turbines at home through any readily available materials such as wood, composite plastic, a bicycle wheel and so on. The Fundamental structure of residential wind turbine comprises of turbines (which can be made at home), wind vane to automatically get the turbines in the direction of wind, and an electrical generator along with a Stand. The generator is an important part of the unit as it converts mechanical energy of the rotating turbines into electrical energy which is used by devices.

Wind turbine generates completely green energy. As their use doesn’t pollute our environment, many governments are offering incentives on its use. Residential turbines are relatively cheaper than solar panels and produce more power. If your area of residence has a consistent flow of wind, then you should definitely choose this source of renewable energy over Solar energy. Wind turbines in such areas can produce a daily power output of over 1-4 kilowatts depending upon the rating of the turbines.

The Essentials of setting up Wind Turbine System at your home –

1. Residential Wind Turbines

Selecting turbines is the most essential variable if installing a wind energy system. You should be mindful in selecting the kind of turbine, its specifications and generating capability when purchasing from supplier. If you wish to generate electricity and additionally have some fun, then perhaps I would recommend building your very own residential turbines. Its lots of fun all of which will cost you much less since you will likely be making use of raw materials presently available with you.

2. Construction and Installation

Whether you choose to purchase micro turbines from a supplier or perhaps choose to build your own through your efforts, you certainly will require an installation and construction manual. My personal experience shows that Installation and construction courses including Video lessons are more beneficial and most likely better to understand and carry out.

Larger quantity of electricity generation, lower cost and easy installation setup has made wind energy as the most widely and commonly used method to generate electricity at home.

How Much Electricity Does a Wind Turbine Generate?

A wind turbine generator is basically a mechanical electrical machine that converts the kinetic energy of the wind into the required rotational mechanical energy with the use of turbine blades that is needed to produce free electrical energy.

Turbine generators for home use can generate many kilowatts of free electricity and are a popular choice for remote farms, houses and log cabins which have no reasonable access to mains electricity but are in areas with a good amount of wind speed.

So what are the main advantages of using a wind turbine generator?

  1. They are environmentally friendly as they do not emit any harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere or leave any potential harmful residues.
  2. They do not consume any non-renewable fossil fuels to produce the electricity, thereby helping the environment.
  3. Wind turbine generators are classed as an alternative energy source saving on conventional electrical power generation.
  4. Although the initial purchase and installation costs of your wind turbine generator may be high, the savings made in generating your own electricity will offset this cost, so you could be getting your electricity free for many years to come.
  5. Turbine generators give you independence by doing away with paying the utility companies for your electricity, and with a turbine generator on your own land, you have your very own power generating plant.

Generating your own power could be as easy as installing a suitable wind turbine generator and using the power from the wind to lower your monthly bills. Wind turbine design and generator technology has come a long way over the last few years as more and more companies jump onto the renewable energy bandwagon. Today complete wind turbine systems and DIY kits are available for the homeowner with turbines that are more efficient, smaller and quieter than ever before.

Most modern “wind turbine generators” are available locally or online in a large variety of different sizes and power ratings to suit any homeowners needs. Although turbine generators are based mainly on well established motor-generator designs which have been successfully used for many decades, the newer generator designs are much more energy efficient and as such include many new improvements.

In the past, to have a home wind turbine system, most homeowners needed a lot of free space on their property which was completely open and exposed to provide a strong enough and consistent amount of wind to rotate the larger heavier blades of the traditional wind turbine.

Back then wind energy was a relatively new, so the old style electrical generators used for many domestic installations were nothing more than scaled-down versions of the larger commercial motor-generators. But these were not very well suited to smaller domestic type installations.

To begin with, these early generators required very strong winds to help start the blades rotating, the result was they needed to be fixed and mounted on the ends of tall poles high up above the ground to be able to catch the stronger winds. These generators were themselves very heavy, so they needed to be positioned into the oncoming wind before they would started rotating and generating electricity.

This positioning and orientation into the oncoming wind was achieved by using a large tail fin positioned directly behind the generator. As a result of their heavy weight, it required a strong enough amount of wind to rotate it into the required position. Then this meant that most of the time they would miss most of the smaller lighter winds and not position themselves correctly. Although these were very good at turning these stronger winds into huge amounts of electrical power, most residential and domestic locations are not normally favourable to these strong winds.

However, a couple of decades ago, smaller modern generator designs began to start to become available on the marketplace that would take fuller advantage of not only the stronger winds but the much lighter winds as well found in most residential locations. These newer wind turbine generators could rotate at much lower speeds than the older generators and because these were lighter and better balanced, they could even orientate themselves into position much quicker without the need of large heavy tail fins.

Some newer vertical axis turbine designs are even capable of catching and using a light breeze aimed at it from any one direction. These newer more innovative turbine designs make for a perfect turbine generator for use in the home, boat or recreational vehicle, and for the homeowner they are actually a lot less expensive to run than the electrical power which they generate.

The modern wind turbine generator available today is designed to be installed and used in most residential type installations. So they are manufactured smaller and more lightweight allowing them to be quickly and easily mounted directly onto a roof or onto a short pole or tower. Installing a newer turbine generator as part of your home wind power system will allow you to reduce most of the higher costs of maintaining and installing a taller and more expensive turbine tower as you would have before in the past.

Also, although these newer generator designs would generate less power when turning compared to their larger and older cousins of the past, for sure they will be rotating more often and therefore can generate the same amounts of free electricity over a period of time. The result is that these improved wind turbine designs will actually give a more consistent and reliable amount of electrical energy from your wind energy system.

As these newer “wind turbine generator” designs are quieter and less obtrusive, there may be lesser complaints from your neighbours about your wind energy system. Then you can relax in the knowledge that your wind turbine generator will still keep delivering free power from any passing breeze or strong wind for many years to come.
